What’s Smaller Than A Shape?

The Answer: A line.

When I started researching this, I really didn’t think the details could this broken down. But with most things in 2020, the universe responds with, “But wait! There’s more!”

Design Dojo defines a line as, “The path of a moving point through space.” Depending on how you interpret that line (pun intended), a line becomes more clear or less clear.

Our friend Google defines a line as:

a long, narrow mark or path a length of cord, rope, wire or other material serving a particular purpose

All of these definitions are true and meh to me, but I couldn’t end up finding a better way to define a line myself. So we’ll stick with Design Dojo on this one.

Beyond being the single thing that creates every other thing used in beauty — because let’s be real, even a colored in circle without a border is still just a bunch of lines — lines apparently has specific qualities that can be classified.

direction, rhythm, angularity, weight, style

All of these elements put together help to influence emotions, reactions, expectations and mind-bending effects to produce an outcome from the viewer. I don’t know that any artist would release their art to the world without wanting…
