What’s Smaller Than A Shape?

Every single line means something. — Jean-Michel Basquiat

The Answer: A line.

When I started researching this, I really didn’t think the details could this broken down. But with most things in 2020, the universe responds with, “But wait! There’s more!”

Design Dojo defines a line as, “The path of a moving point through space.” Depending on how you interpret that line (pun intended), a line becomes more clear or less clear.

Our friend Google defines a line as:

a long, narrow mark or path a length of cord, rope, wire or other material serving a particular purpose

All of these definitions are true and meh to me, but I couldn’t end up finding a better way to define a line myself. So we’ll stick with Design Dojo on this one.

Beyond being the single thing that creates every other thing used in beauty — because let’s be real, even a colored in circle without a border is still just a bunch of lines — lines apparently has specific qualities that can be classified.

direction, rhythm, angularity, weight, style

All of these elements put together help to influence emotions, reactions, expectations and mind-bending effects to produce an outcome from the viewer. I don’t know that any artist would release their art to the world without wanting some sort of reaction.

And lines are the potentially the most fundamental piece to evoke said reaction. As shown in this video by KQED Art School, lines are how we live our lives. So below are the 5 classifiers of lines experimented with for today’s beauty creation process.

How often do you consider lines when making decisions? Looking around your space, are there particular lines that you see more often?
