Ways To Talk About Beauty
I’ve got to be honest, I never would have imagined how many ways there were to speak about color. It makes sense, given that when you speak about topics scientifically there are always more words and ways to define things than the average person uses. But still, hue means color? Value is defined by light or dark, not high and low? The color wheel that I was taught is a lie?
So today, in an attempt to consolidate the new language for myself, I’ve created a list of words I’ve learned in understanding beauty:
chroma: another name for saturation or the intensity of the color, also called the vividness or purity of a color
hue: signifies the pure color being spoken of
value: is the relative lightness or darkness of color
tint: is mixing a color or hue with white
shade: is mixing a color or hue with black
tone: is mixing the color or hue with grey
saturation: is used to discuss how pure a hue or color is
So today’s beauty had a focus on language, and that is a beautiful thing in and of itself.
